Our Floor Plan

Published on

We’ve spent the past couple months working on making this floor plan exactly what we want. We now feel that it is finished just as our dream home layout would be. More on that in a bit.

We have also been spending this time preparing for our move. When we listed our current home, we had some decent traffic the first weekend and ended up with a full price offer that Monday. We couldn’t have asked for that to go better. We are now coming up on our closing and getting closer to making our move. We’re ready, but the last few weeks have definitely been hectic trying to juggle everything to make sure the blueprints don’t get put on the back burner while we take care of selling and moving. We’re going to miss this house very much, but we are pretty giddy talking about everything we can make happen in our new home 🙂.

So back to our new floor plan. We’ve been going back and forth with an architect in NWI–making small tweaks here and there, and maybe even some bigger changes 😏. It’s really been exciting to dream up our own, custom floor plan.

We mentioned previously that we wanted 3 bedrooms and 3.5 baths. Lexi really wanted the primary closet to be connected to the laundry room, and we were able to make that happen. We also have a dedicated office for Colin since he works fully remote. A few other things we were wanting: oversized 3-car garage, stairs to the basement in the garage, a large kitchen pantry, covered front porch and back patio, and plenty of natural light.

One big ticket item we talked about was a golf simulator room. We initially talked about putting up a separate building to act as a ‘pool house.’ We know that we eventually want a pool, so we figured it would be fun to have this building in the backyard to put a golf simulator in along with a bar, lounging area, and bathroom (so people using the pool don’t have to run through the house soaking wet to use the bathroom). We also talked about having some unfinished area in this building to act as extra outdoor storage so we wouldn’t have to put up a shed later. We were able to figure that with how we had the house we would be able to afford to put this building up and save some headache down the road. One day, someone gave us the idea to attach this building to the house. It would cut down on some costs–running utilities through the yard and eliminates one wall needing to be built. We decided to run with that idea. We liked the idea of being able to access this space from the house as well as outside. We’re putting this part just on a slab so it won’t add to our basement, so that also keeps costs down.

On the right side of the house we have two extra bedrooms with their own bathrooms and a linen closet in the hall. The simulator room is also attached to this side–with room for the golf sim, a bar, and a sectional sofa. We also added the bathroom to this room for easy access from the yard. On the back of this space is an unfinished storage area with a small garage door so we can store yard tools and other things. The middle of the house holds the living room, office, kitchen, and dining nook. Then on the left we have the primary suite, laundry room, powder room, and stairs to the unfinished basement. We were also able to put stairs to the basement in the garage, and the garage has enough space for Colin to set up a workshop (if you don’t know us, we love a DIY project here and there).

So there we have it. Our floor plan is finished, and now we just have to work on exterior elevation and get the blueprints finalized. If you take away the extra area for the simulator room and storage, we were able to stay just under 2800 square feet in the main house. We’re so excited to get these prints done so we can get moving on actually starting this build!

See you next time 🙂
