Kitchen Renderings

Published on

One of the things Lexi does for Modern Building Contractors (MBC) is help clients with the design and finishes for their home. Part of this process is offering a 3D rendering of the home so they can see the finishes rather than just trying to picture what things will look like in their heads.

Quick sidebar here—I’m not sure we ever mentioned that MBC is the builder for our home. It is Lexi’s family’s business. Lexi grew up being around new construction because her grandpa started Modern Heating and Cooling, Inc. back in 1963, which is an HVAC business. That business is still in the family today, and a few years ago they decided to go for a general contractor’s license and start up Modern Building Contractors. MBC’s first official job has been Lexi’s brother and sister-in-law’s home. They will also be building her parents’ home and have several other homes lined up to start sometime this year and next year. If you love watching new builds you can follow all of their homes over on Instagram at @modernbuildingcontractors.

Back to the point. Since Lexi can make these renderings, we’re going to have one for our home as well. Someone expressed concern with our kitchen layout and possibly not being able to work in enough cabinet space. So we decided Lexi could quickly render up a kitchen design to make sure we could have a nice layout.

Being that this is our dream home, we want to make sure this kitchen also fits the dream 🙂. We want nice appliances, plenty of cabinets, and maybe even some nice extras. The basic appliances you have to cover in a kitchen are: range (or cooktop and oven separately), refrigerator/freezer, dishwasher, and microwave. We also love to always include a trash cabinet so you don’t have to find space to place a garbage can somewhere in your kitchen. Some extra appliances we want are an ice maker and a beverage fridge. We also want to nix a typical range and do a rangetop and then a double oven wall unit.

Once the rendering was done, any concern immediately vanished. There’s more than enough cabinet space in the kitchen. We are also going to put lower cabinets in the pantry. So we will be more than covered with kitchen and pantry storage. Without further ado, let’s walk through this kitchen!

We worked in a 48” rangetop that will have drawers underneath for utensils, pots and pans, and other things that you want right by your stove. We also want a built in hood vent so we can wrap it in tile or something else to make it look nice. The double wall oven will be off to the left end of the cabinets. We will be looking at a 42” side-by-side fridge/freezer to place over in the nook on the right side of the island (this is also where we stuck the trash cabinet, but it just looks like a regular base cabinet). The sink and dishwasher are in the island.

The pantry is going to hold the ice maker, beverage fridge, and microwave. These will all be under-counter appliances. Putting the microwave in the pantry was purely a personal decision. We honestly don’t use the microwave a lot, so we would rather have it hidden away. Another thing we decided we want in the pantry is a second, smaller sink. As mentioned in a previous post, Colin will be setting up his coffee bar in the pantry. It’s going to be very convenient to have a small sink right there for him to rinse his glasses or coffee tools. We also have another trash cabinet in the pantry for the same reason—ease of throwing things away when making coffee or other prep that may be done in there. The trash cabinet in the kitchen will be a double trash can, and the one in the pantry will be a single trash can. Above the cabinets we will have open shelving for keeping all regular pantry items.

So there we have it. This is just a sample plan. We will still meet with a kitchen designer to create a final layout and pick out our cabinets. This was just a way to ease our minds (and, honestly, was fun for Lexi!).

Let us know what you think of this possible kitchen 🙂
