Home Finishes
- Published on

Now that we are ready to start actually building we need to get to picking out finishes for the home. Among the many decisions you have when doing a custom build, you’re going to be looking at finishes throughout the home like: cabinets, countertops, paint, flooring, tile, doors, windows, exterior (brick, siding, stone, etc), plumbing fixtures…the list goes on.
Some of the first things to get ordered, at least in the current state of things, are your brick, windows, and appliances. We started off by going to pick out brick. We are wanting the home to be mostly black brick with some wood-tone siding accents. We went out to a local brick supply company and looked at some samples. They were also able to give us some addresses of homes or businesses that used the brick we liked so we could go look at it on a large scale. We picked out two different options we have to decide between. One feels like a pretty classic black, and the other has more of a sheen on it that lightens the color up a bit. Here are the options we looked at.
We will have to make a decision on that pretty quickly and get the brick ordered.
We also just recently had our first cabinet meeting. We don’t have a layout to show yet, but we picked out style and colors and went over all the wants we have for the kitchen. We’re not going to go into detail yet about everything we want in the kitchen, but we’re so excited about the styles and colors we chose so we do want to show that!
First of all, we are going to be doing all slab cabinetry, so these doors aren’t reflective of what we want (just the colors are). We felt that was more fitting to the mid-century modern style than a classic shaker cabinet. We also like how clean the slab cabinets look. The green is for the kitchen perimeter cabinets and the pantry cabinets. The wood tone is for the kitchen island, the primary bathroom vanities, and the built-ins next to the fireplace. The dark blue is for the simulator room bar and the bathroom attached to that room. The teal is for the laundry room and the other two extra bathrooms. The powder room will get some sort of pedestal or statement sink.
We do also want to meet with some other cabinet makers to get another option. This was all chosen from one vendor. So nothing here is set in stone yet, but we are super happy with how things have started!
Next up, we’re going to have a meeting to discuss electrical. We have to decide where we want outlets, can lights, ceiling fans, and chandeliers. We will also be ordering our windows soon and have to pick out appliances. We will continue to update as we get things picked out. This is Lexi’s favorite part of the process—dreaming up a design and being able to pick out the finishes to bring that vision to life 🤩.
Speaking of design, Lexi will be starting a SketchUp rendering of our home soon. So we’ll be back next time with some sneak peeks of that. This part is fun, so we hope you enjoy following along!
