Flooring and Tile Finish

Published on

Our flooring and tile is installed! As mentioned previously, we picked out a laminate flooring to run throughout the house. Our installer worked on getting this down first as well as tile flooring in the bathrooms so that our trim carpenters could come in and start on installing cabinets everywhere.

As the first “finish” we are seeing installed inside the house, we were overly excited to see even the littlest bit of flooring starting to go down. The installer we hired did a stellar job, and we absolutely love the look of the floors.

In the bathrooms, we are finally seeing the tile installed! For the extra bathrooms that are all getting that beige/cream tile on the floors, we decided to have that laid in a straight stacked pattern. Lexi wanted this to end up looking like one large piece of tile versus a lot of smaller tiles that have a distinct pattern. Having the straight stacked grout lines helps keep your eye off of the grout and focused on the tile itself, helping it look pretty seamless and like a continuous slab. We did straight patterns for laying shower/tub tile in these bathrooms as well. All of the tiles we picked out looked best when not laid in any distinct pattern. So in the front bathroom we have the white fluted tiles on the tub walls to complement the white bathtub. In the middle bathroom shower we have the fishscale tile on the walls and the square mosaic tiles on the floor. Then in the back bathroom shower we have another fluted tile on the walls with more square mosaic tiles on the floor. If you read previous posts, you might remember that when we picked out the tiles for the two showers we actually had them swapped in terms of their assigned bathrooms. The shower floor tiles ended up getting installed in the wrong showers and rather than re-do it all, we just swapped the wall tiles too. So the pairings are still correct, but they are just in opposite bathrooms than what we originally decided!

In the powder room, we chose a 14x14 glossy black tile to create a little moody moment. We had this one laid in a diamond pattern. Powder rooms are the perfect rooms to have a little fun in because they are so small. It’s great to try some different design choices to really make the room pop. Our ultimate dream here would have been to tile the entire room–floor and walls. We would have chosen a different tile on the walls than the floor. However, this wasn’t in the budget right now. We hope to eventually tile the walls to really finish that moody feel, but right now we’re doing what we can with the floors and accents (vanity, mirror, lights). We’re still very excited about how this room will turn out.

The tile flooring we are most excited about is in our primary bathroom. Lexi found a beautiful terrazzo tile to go on the floor in here, and it looks just as great as we hoped it would. When we decided on a mid century modern theme, one of the first things Lexi thought of was a terrazzo tile floor. Terrazzo can be very pricy for the real deal, but thankfully we found this one at a reasonable price and were able to make it happen. We knew we wanted it in our bathroom being that is one of the main rooms we will use every day. The tile we chose for our primary shower is just as dreamy in our opinion. It is a fluted wood-look tile. We had it installed on the walls and floor of the shower to give it that seamless wood feeling all over. We felt these tiles were perfect to help create our bathroom sanctuary!

That’s all for tile and flooring. This was a huge step in terms of finishes because it really covers a lot of the details in our home! Next up will be cabinets and trim work so stay tuned 😬
